Streamlining DevOps Workflow with Enhanced Mobile Alert

Background

AppDynamics is a powerful application performance monitoring (APM) tool that empowers you to provide an exceptional user and developer experience. The APM solution offers application mapping, dynamic baseline creation, and in-depth code diagnostics. This project is concentrated on examining and prioritizing mobile features to enhance mobile adoption among the DevOps workflow users.

My role

Product Design intern

User Research • Identifying Pain Points

Methodology

The research framework consisted of two complementary studies: an analysis of mobile app usage patterns specifically focused on monitoring and troubleshooting behaviors, alongside a systematic feature prioritization assessment to capture user expectations.

Interviews • 12 participants

Goal

Understand the primary ways in which users use the mobile app to monitor and troubleshoot application issues and identify areas for improvement.

Outcomes

  • Understanding most users behave reactively to respond to notifications.

  • The primary challenges users face are notifications do not have sufficient information to troubleshoot.

"Our application teams rely on the mobile app for rapid assessment. They need to make quick decisions: is this alert worth getting out of bed for, or is it something that might automatically resolve itself?"

—  quality assurance (QA) Manager

Feature Prioritization Survey • 168 participants

Goal

Evaluate, rank, and decide on the most important and valuable features to incorporate into our product from a user-centric standpoint.

Final Design • Alert Feed

Design Philosophy

My design centers on clarity and instant comprehension. Presenting the feed in a streamlined interface where color-coded alerts and thoughtful hierarchy guide rapid decision-making. The experience seamlessly adapts from quick triage to deep analysis, offering both high-level insights and granular details across all devices. Each alert tells a story through its timeline, with integrated metrics and root cause analysis providing crucial context for incident resolution.

Final Design • Notifications & Widgets

Design Philosophy

The notification system balances urgency with clarity, ensuring critical updates catch attention without overwhelming users. The iOS widget complements this with a compact, real-time feed of the ten most recent alerts, enabling effortless system monitoring
