Designing a Clinically Integrated Supply Chain

Background

GHX (Global Healthcare Exchange) operates the largest healthcare trading network in North America, facilitating billions in transactions between healthcare providers and suppliers. Through its acquisition of Lumere, GHX expanded beyond traditional supply chain management to pioneer evidence-based procurement.

Lumere bridges a critical gap in healthcare procurement by connecting clinical evidence with purchasing decisions. Our platform helps healthcare organizations answer crucial questions: Which products deliver the best patient outcomes? Are we making financially responsible choices? How do we standardize across our system?

My role

Leading design at Lumere, I'm transforming how healthcare organizations approach medical device procurement. Through thoughtful design, I'm helping merge clinical evidence with business decisions – creating experiences that make sense of complex healthcare data and processes.

My scope encompasses three essential products working in harmony:

- An evidence library that puts clinical research at decision-makers' fingertips

- A workflow platform that turns evaluation processes into structured, collaborative experiences

- An analytics system that reveals opportunities for both clinical and financial improvement

Every feature I design contributes to our vision of a more clinically integrated supply chain.

Challenges

Inconsistent Clinical Expertise

Supply chain teams often struggle to discern which medical devices are interchangeable and the attributes that matter to clinicians, leading to over-reliance on physician experience or opinion.

Data Challenges

Teams have difficulty accessing the necessary data in a timely manner. The processes for research and data curation are mostly manual, leading to significant inefficiencies.

Friction-Filled Processes

Lack of standardization across and within facilities is a key issue, leading to reliance on manual spreadsheets, inefficient categorizations, and poor communication.

Supply Chain Resiliency

The manual processes and lack of available data make it challenging to manage supply interruptions, particularly during crises.

Product Overview • Product Request Form

Background

The Product Request Form serves as the critical entry point to Lumere's value analysis workflow, where physicians and clinicians initiate requests for new medical products. Traditionally, hospitals managed these requests through a fragmented system of emails, paper forms, and verbal communications – leading to incomplete information, delayed evaluations, and frustrated stakeholders.

Product Overview • Product Evaluation Workflow

Background

At the heart of Lumere's platform lies the Projects module, which transforms complex medical product evaluations into structured, collaborative workflows. This is where value analysis and supply chain teams orchestrate critical decisions that impact both patient care and financial outcomes. Through centralized project management, stakeholders can evaluate multiple products, capture committee votes, model financial scenarios, engage with their suppliers, and document the complete decision-making process.

Product Overview • Compliance Monitoring

Background

Lumere offers two essential tools designed to maximize the value of your strategic decisions.

  • Compliance Measurement Tool offers real-time visibility into product utilization patterns, helping teams monitor and optimize implementation success across all initiatives.

  • Rebate Management tool that transforms the complex task of tracking supplier rebates into an automated process, ensuring organizations capture every dollar they're owed.

Together, these tools help healthcare organizations close the gap between strategic decisions and realized value, providing the visibility needed to drive meaningful change and financial impact.

Product Overview • Clinical Analytics

Background

Understanding product utilization patterns across a healthcare system requires connecting complex data points from clinical and financial sources. Lumere's Analytics suite bridges this gap by combining EHR and purchasing data to create a comprehensive view of how medical products flow through and are utilized at an organization. Teams can now track product usage patterns across procedures, analyze physician preference variations, and identify standardization opportunities across facilities. This level of insight has transformed supply chain teams from reactive purchasers into strategic partners in clinical and financial decision-making, enabling evidence-based conversations about product choice and utilization.

Product Overview • VendorMate Vendor Credentialing & Visitor Check-in Kiosk
